about

ツイン タイガー シャーク 改良新発売!

The original score on the original hardware is in 8-bit 12,2 kHz mono.
The 16-bit Stereo Edition is simply the source material (S3M files) that has been panned (as the score was composed for mono).

The S3M files will eventually be available here for free : modarchive.org/index.php?request=view_artist_modules&query=84856

Originally, TTS-NTS was supposed to use something akin to the YM2203 for music. The problem was that the only programmer for the project is the same person that is the only pixel artist, head of logistics, PR and janitor, so there simply weren’t enough resources for implementation and tooling without significant delays to delivery of the game.

The quickest solution was simply playback of mono 8-bit 12,2 kHz PCM loops. The reason for 12200 Hz in particular, is that a sample is read from memory an evenly 203 times per frame for each of the four channels.

The point of using FM synthesis (like the YM2203) would be lost if it were to be rendered to a 12.2 kHz file. Although PCM playback allows for making music with modern means, doing so might not be a good fit for the game. (And less fun!)

To get a bit of a retro flavor, similar to NeoGeo games, I went with the Scream Tracker 3 format from the early 90s. For fun, I opted to go with 10 instead of 16 channels (still a lot) and try to stay under 1 MegaByte for the sample set for all songs. (Also a LOT.)

Enjoy!
